Interestingly, anecdotal evidence has long suggested that proliferative diabetic retinopathy is rarely associated clinically with retinitis pigmentosa. Methods and Results. Here we show that neonatal mice with classic inherited retinal degeneration Pdeb rd1 Pdeb rd1 ; fail to mount reactive retinal neovascularization in a mouse model of oxygen-induced proliferative retinopathy. We also present a comparable human paradigm: spontaneous regression of retinal neovascularization associated with long-standing diabetes mellitus occurs when retinitis pigmentosa becomes clinically evident. Both mouse and human data indicate that reactive retinal neovascularization either fails to develop or regresses when the number of photoreceptor cells is markedly reduced. Our findings support the hypothesis that a functional mechanism underlying this anti-angiogenic state is failure of the predicted up-regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor. Conclusion. Preventive and therapeutic strategies against both proliferative and degenerative retinopathies may emerge from this work.

The studies were non-comparative in design except for one which compared the safety and efficacy of SUPREFACT 900 mcg day dosage; n 75 ; to that of danazol administered at 400-1000 mg day n 72 ; . These seven other trials primarily demonstrate the safety of SUPREFACT in patients with endometriosis. Adverse Events: A total of 1135 female patients with varying degrees of endometriosis were treated with SUPREFACT nasal solution. Of these 1135 patients, 994 88% ; were administered SUPREFACT for at least six months. One hundred and forty-one 12% ; patients were treated with SUPREFACT for less than six months. In one open-label, uncontrolled study, 39 of 104 patients who completed six months of therapy entered a second treatment cycle and, of these, 11 entered a third treatment cycle. For these patients entering subsequent treatment cycles, the duration of therapy ranged from 3 to 12 months. For studies which reported treatment-related adverse events, 448 503 89.1% ; patients reported one or more adverse reactions. The most frequently affected Body Systems were the Nervous System, Skin and Appendages and the Urogenital System, in which the incidences of treatmentrelated adverse events were 85.2%, 19.5% and 30.6%, respectively. A review of 17 years of drug treatment at a mastalgia clinic described the efficacy of daily administration of danazol 200 mg ; , bromocriptine 5 mg ; and the fixed oil six capsules of 500 mg ; in 414 patients 324 with cyclical and 90 with non-cyclical mastalgia ; . Treatment with danazol was most effective in 79% of patients the fixed oil and bromocriptine were effective in 58% and 54% of patients, respectively. However, the rates of adverse reactions were higher in patients treated with danazol and bromocriptine 30% and 35%, respectively ; than in those treated with the fixed oil 4% ; 24 ; . Diabetic neuropathy Dietary supplementation with the fixed oil was associated with a clinical, neurophysiological and quantitative sensory improvement in 22 male and female patients with diabetic polyneuropathy 22 ; . After a preliminary trial in 22 patients with diabetes, positive effects were also reported in many neurological and neurophysiological parameters in a parallel double-blind study of 111 male and female patients with mild diabetic neuropathy 23 ; . Oral administration of the fixed oil to male patients with diabetes and healthy male volunteers 20 g, enriched with vitamin E ; daily for 1 week enhanced erythropoiesis and changed the serum fatty acid profiles in both groups. Inhibition of platelet-activating factor 4 and plasma b-thromboglobulin was also observed in both groups 68 ; . Menopausal flushing The efficacy of the fixed oil was evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 35 women with hot flushes. Despite a paucity of data concerning the specific analgesic benefits of chemotherapy, 49, 50 there is a strong clinical impression that tumor shrinkage is generally associated with relief of pain. Although there are some reports of analgesic effect even in the absence of significant tumor shrinkage, 51-53 the likelihood of a favorable effect on pain is generally related to the likelihood of tumor response. Surgery may have a role in the relief of symptoms caused by specific problems, such as obstruction of a hollow viscus, 54-57 unstable bony structures, 58-60 and compression of neural tissues.61-63 Bone pain may similarly be relieved by systemically administered local treatments, including bisphosphonates64, 65 or radiopharmaceuticals such as strontium-89.66 4. The application of a regional anesthetic or neuroablative intervention. The results of the World Health Organization "analgesic ladder" validation studies suggest that 10% to 30% of patients with cancer pain do not achieve a satisfactory balance between relief and side effects using systemic pharmacotherapy alone.67-72 Anesthetic and neurosurgical techniques may reduce or eliminate the requirement for systemically administered opioids to achieve adequate analgesia. In general, regional analgesic techniques such as intraspinal opioid and local anesthetic administration or intrapleural local anesthetic administration are usually considered first because they can achieve this end without compromising neurologic integrity. The purpose of the present work was to observe changes of mercury in whole blood B-Hg ; and urine, superoxide dismutase SOD ; , glutathione peroxidase GPx ; and catalase CAT ; in erythrocytes, selenium in whole blood B-Se ; , plasma P-Se ; and urine U-Se ; , and ferritin in serum during pregnancy, and to evaluate the relationship between mother and child. The study included 11 mercury exposed pregnant women living in Idrija and seven non-exposed pregnant women as a control group. After cessation of Idrija Mercury Mine activity in 1994, the air mercury concentration in the town has been significantly decreased. In the last 8 years the average concentration of elemental mercury in Idrija has been between 30 and 170 ng m3 . The blood and urine samples from mothers were taken in the first and last trimester and the cord blood was taken at the time of birth. The main conclusions indicate that 1 ; the Hg concentrations in blood and urine in the exposed group were not significantly higher than those in the control group; 2 ; the mean SOD activity from the exposed pregnant women was significantly higher than that of the control group p 0, 01 3 ; found the mean PSe, B-Se, ferritin concentration, and GPx activity lower in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy than in the 1st trimester, but P-Se and ferritin concentrations were significantly lower p 0, 001 4 ; significant differences in SOD activities and P-Se concentrations were found between the 1st trimester of pregnancy and the cord blood samples in both groups, whereas no significant difference was found between 3rd trimester of pregnancy and cord blood samples, except in the control group, where P-Se concentrations were significantly lower p 0, 02 ; and SOD activities were higher p 0, 02 5 ; the following correlations during pregnancy in the exposed group were observed: U-Se and P-Se -0, 471; p 0, 03 ; , B-Se and ferritin concentrations 0, 891; p 0, 02 ; and between B-Se and B-Hg 0, 818; p 0, 05 ; in cord blood samples. The results of B-Se, P-Se and GPx are in the accordance with the results represented by Zachara et al. 1993 ; , where decreasing of these parameters showed increased requirement for the element during pregnancy, the same applies to ferritin results. SOD demonstrates an increased activity to the oxygen radical production although no significant increase of Hg has been noted during pregnancy or in cord blood in the both groups, which is probably due to the small number of subjects. Therefore, further studies are needed.
